“Thanksgiving was never meant to be limited to one day.”
So proclaims a plaque that hangs on my wall year-round. I learned the importance of giving thanks years ago when my husband’s job required a transfer that none of us wanted. When I learned we were moving, I sank to the floor and cried. I resented my husband, resented his job, and resented God for not answering my prayers to make a way for us to stay where we were.
I’m ashamed to say my attitude didn’t improve in the weeks and months after the move. I grew bitter and angry and was not a fun person to be around. When I finally concluded there was no way out of this move, I realized my attitude had to change. I couldn’t continue to live with the constant anger.
I resolved that every day, I’d find something to thank God for instead of focusing on all the things I disliked about our new location. Just one thing each day.
Though difficult at first to admit I was thankful for anything, it gradually became easier. Little by little, I noticed my attitude changing until I was able to see why the move was necessary for the well-being of my marriage and family. Such a small act, but what huge results!
This year for Thanksgiving, many are grieving the loss of loved ones, the loss of jobs, or loss of health. We’re tired of the pandemic with all its restrictions, and scared of the future as we see inflation rising and shortages in food and supplies.
But there is much to be thankful for if we pay attention. The trick is to find one thing each day for which to thank God. Just one thing. Are you up for the challenge?
