It’s been a long time since I’ve read poetry. In my teenage years, several poets spoke to my coming-of-age doubts and fears, or my romantic view of the way life should be. But apparently, I left poetry about the same time I left college. And after so many years away from it, my brain forgot how to appreciate it. Even how to read it.
So when a friend from college days connected with me and said he was publishing a book of poetry, I was intrigued. I read the poems he posted on Facebook, and was pleased to find I could actually understand them. They made sense. More than that, they brought on a variety of emotions. One made me laugh. Another brought tears. Still another wrapped me in a warm sense of awe at the greatness of our God. Others stirred a desire to strengthen my ties with other believers, to reach out to those in need.
And so, I am excited to recommend Larry P. Morris’s book, Among Us: Stories of Worship and Faith. His book is divided into sections: Stories of Worship, Inspired by the Word, Holy Days, Parables, Just for Fun, Grace and Prayer. Each section has its own emotion, its own atmosphere. Initially, I bought the electronic version, and approached it like a novel, reading through as fast as I could. Not too far into it, I put the brakes on, discovering again that poetry is meant to be savored, to spend time considering. Now that I’ve finished reading it, I plan to buy the print version so I can more easily mark and return to the poems I especially enjoy.
If you’re looking for a Christmas gift, or just something to help you slow down during this season of Thanksgiving and joy, consider Larry’s book of poems for believers. You won’t be sorry!
