If you’ve ever wondered about the banner picture, it’s from a painting done by one of the counselors at Lutherdale Bible Camp many years ago. When my family lived there, this was the site for the evening campfires during summer camp. Three sections of benches faced this structure built of logs. It too had a bench across the bottom so those who were leading the campfire had a place to sit when they weren’t “on.” Several yards behind this structure, the ground made a steep drop to the lake where a floating cross was anchored far enough out to be seen by the campers. Most weeks, some of the campers formed a choir, and usually on the last night of camp, the choir members would take boats out to where the cross was anchored. As they sang from out on the lake, they’d light flares attached to the cross’s frame, making it visible to those on shore. Many times, we’d sing a song and the choir would echo it back to us. Such a beautiful experience, and a sweet message of peace because “God is Here.”
