We didn’t always observe this in my family of origin, but it was an ever-present attitude. I recall once when I was scolding my brother for dropping the washed silverware into the hot rinse water (we didn’t have a dishwasher), causing the hot water to splash onto my hand. Mom chided me, saying if my best friend were doing that, we’d be laughing about it. I disagreed, but her comment has stuck in my head for decades. I suspect that’s one reason my siblings and I enjoy each other’s fellowship so much. Just some old-fashioned wisdom.
