We need to read stories like The Storm Breaks Forth for perspective. History repeats itself over and over and over, because human nature doesn’t change.
Terri Wangard’s new novel shows us just how far we’ve traveled from WWI. Unfortunately, it’s a very short distance. Her portrayal of the treatment of German immigrants/German Americans could have been taken from our recent war with Iraq and Afghanistan and our fear of Muslims, or our current controversy over racial prejudice.
The Storm Breaks Forth continues the story of Maren and Peter Bloch, whom we met in Roll Back the Clouds. World War I has been raging in Europe when the US officially enters the war. Peter is drafted into the WI National Guard while Maren and her family suffer the indignities thrust upon immigrants who fled Germany’s restrictive government. Along with horrible glimpses of trench warfare, we see the battle waged on the home front with intimidation tactics and imprisonment of law-abiding German citizens, book drives, victory gardens, and the Spanish flu. It’s all here. Don’t miss this book by a talented historical author.
