Does your family enjoy playing games together?
My family has a board game we’ve enjoyed called Life Stories. It’s not a race to the finish type of game, but one that provides topics for conversation between friends, family, or even people you may have just met. Being somewhat conversationally-challenged, I love this game because I don’t have to endure that awkward silence while I try to think of some clever question to ask someone to fill the void. But more than that, it’s great fun to learn about people on a deeper level.
So, if you’re “game,” I thought we’d play a virtual game of Life Stories. There are 4 categories of cards with questions–Valuables, Memories, Etchings, and Alternatives. Each week, I’ll roll the die and see which category we land on. I’ll post a question with my answer. If you want to play along, simply add your answer to either the comment section below or on Facebook.
Ready? Let’s have some fun.
Our first question is from the Alternatives pile.
“Describe one of your favorite childhood toys or games.”
My favorite toy was a stuffed dog named Lazy Bones. He was a birthday present for my fifth birthday. I lived at a camp that was a popular winter retreat destination for Boy Scout troops from the Chicago area. One particular troop came on the weekend of my birthday the two years I turned 4 and 5. They invited my mother and siblings (Dad was the camp director so he was already there) to eat in the dining hall with them for the Sunday noon meal. The den mothers baked me a birthday cake and presented me with a gift while all the Boy Scouts sang the birthday song for me.
As you can see, Lazy Bones’ eyes drooped, making him look sleepy. He came with a red bow around his neck, which was later replaced with a then-popular MIA bracelet bearing the inscription, “Jesus Christ, 33 A.D.” He was a faithful friend all through grade school, jr. high, high school, and even college. Yes, I still have him, though he usually stays in a crate with my other memorabilia. He didn’t especially want to take time out of his nap for a picture, but he was too lazy to make any bones about it!
Okay, now it’s your turn! What was one of your favorite childhood toys or games?
